Continuous Flow Hot Water Systems – Mandurah to Rockingham

Continuous flow hot water, also known as instant water heaters, heat water only when you need it. Unlike traditional tank systems, they don’t store water. Instead, they heat water directly as it flows through the unit.

These systems are compact and highly efficient. When you turn on a hot water tap, cold water travels through a pipe into the unit. Here, either a gas burner or an electric element heats the water instantly.

Continuous flow hot water systems are versatile and can be installed in various locations within a home or building. They adapt to different energy sources like natural gas, propane, or electricity. This flexibility makes them suitable for both residential and commercial properties, providing an efficient solution for hot water needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a continuous flow hot water system?

A continuous flow hot water system — also called an instantaneous or tankless system — heats water on demand as it passes through the unit, rather than storing a pre-heated volume in a tank. When you turn on a hot tap, cold water flows through the unit’s heat exchanger and is heated immediately, delivering a continuous stream of hot water for as long as the tap is running. There is no stored volume to run out of, making these systems particularly well suited to larger households.

What is the main difference between continuous flow and storage hot water systems?

The key difference is in how water is heated. Storage systems heat and hold a fixed volume of water (typically 80–400 litres) ready for use, which means you can run out during periods of high demand. Continuous flow systems heat water only when needed, providing an unlimited supply. Storage systems tend to have lower upfront costs, while continuous flow units are generally more energy efficient as they do not maintain water temperature constantly throughout the day.

Is a continuous flow hot water system suitable for a large family?

Yes — continuous flow systems are particularly well suited to large families or high-usage households because they cannot run out of hot water. However, it is important to select a unit with the right flow rate capacity (measured in litres per minute) to handle simultaneous demand — for example, two or more showers running at the same time. AJW Plumbing Gas & Air can size the correct unit for your household and usage patterns.

Do continuous flow hot water systems require more maintenance than storage systems?

Continuous flow systems generally require less maintenance than storage systems because there is no tank to corrode or anode rod to replace. However, they do benefit from periodic servicing — typically every two to three years — to check the burner assembly, heat exchanger, flow sensors, and gas connections. In areas with hard water, scale build-up in the heat exchanger can reduce efficiency over time and may require attention.

Can I replace my existing storage hot water system with a continuous flow unit?

In most cases, yes — a continuous flow system can replace an existing gas or electric storage unit. For gas-to-gas replacements, the changeover is usually straightforward. Switching from electric storage to continuous flow gas may require a gas connection if one is not already present, or relocation of pipework. AJW Plumbing Gas & Air can assess your existing setup and advise on what is involved before providing a quote.
