Heat Pump Hot Water Systems

How does a heat pump system work?

A heat pump hot water system is an energy-efficient alternative to traditional water heaters. It works by extracting heat from the air or ground and transferring it to the water tank. This process uses electricity but consumes less energy than conventional electric or gas heaters. Homeowners can save on energy bills and lower carbon emissions. This makes heat pump hot water a smart choice.

Take a look at this quick iStore video to explain the concept

These systems are particularly effective in moderate climates, where the ambient temperature is sufficient for heat extraction. Heat pump water heaters give steady hot water for different household needs. They are a smart choice for families who care about energy efficiency. Overall, they combine efficiency with sustainability, appealing to eco-conscious consumers seeking hot water solutions.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does a heat pump hot water system work?

A heat pump hot water system works by extracting heat from the surrounding air and using it to heat water stored in an insulated tank — similar in principle to how a refrigerator works, but in reverse. Because it moves heat rather than generating it, a heat pump can use significantly less electricity than a conventional electric storage system. It runs on standard household electricity, with no gas connection required.

Why are heat pump hot water systems so energy efficient?

Heat pump systems are energy efficient because they do not generate heat directly from electricity — instead, they transfer ambient heat from the air into the water. For every unit of electricity consumed, a heat pump can deliver three to four units of heating energy. This coefficient of performance (COP) is what makes them far more economical to run than standard electric elements, which convert electricity to heat at a 1:1 ratio.

What government rebates are available for heat pump hot water installation in WA?

Heat pump hot water systems qualify for Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) under the federal Renewable Energy Target, which can reduce the upfront installation cost. The value varies depending on the system’s rated output and your postcode. Some local government and utility provider rebate programs may also apply to heat pump upgrades. AJW Plumbing Gas & Air can confirm the current rebate eligibility and factor any applicable incentives into your quote.

How long does heat pump hot water installation take?

A standard heat pump hot water installation for a residential property typically takes three to five hours. This includes removing the existing system, positioning and securing the new heat pump unit, connecting the water supply and electrical connections, and commissioning the system. Heat pumps require adequate clearance around the unit for airflow, so our team will assess the installation location during an initial site check if needed.

What is the difference between a heat pump and a solar hot water system?

Both systems are energy-efficient alternatives to conventional electric or gas storage, but they work differently. Solar hot water uses roof-mounted panels to capture the sun’s energy directly, making it highly effective but reliant on roof orientation and available space. Heat pumps draw heat from ambient air and can operate effectively regardless of roof configuration or shading. Heat pumps tend to have a lower upfront cost and simpler installation, while solar systems can achieve lower running costs in high-sunshine areas like Mandurah and Rockingham.
